Search engine positioning

Search engine positioning (ranking) describes how high a page appears in search results. It can be improved through unique content, appropriate keywords, clean technology/structure, good user values, and high-quality backlinks.

A good search engine positioning is what every website owner ultimately hopes for in order to direct as much traffic as possible to their pages. Usually, instead of the German term 'Suchmaschinen Positionierung,' the shorter English expression "ranking" is used.

What does search engine positioning mean?

A high positioning, or a high ranking is crucial in search engine optimization. Several Google analyses have shown that most internet users only click on one of the first four to five search results after a search. So, anyone who wants to attract traffic to their own website must achieve a position among the top five search results. Even the lower half of the first page receives significantly less traffic, and anyone who appears on the second page of search results has already lost.

What affects the positioning in the search results?

The ranking is influenced by many factors that together make up what is known as SEO (Search Engine Optimization). The pages should naturally provide visitors with meaningful information: For example, Google uses its crawlers to find out whether the texts on the page are unique content written by the page itself or if they were merely copied from other sites. The crawlers also look out for whether the page has been linked multiple times on the internet or not. For instance, someone who has written a truly good and worthwhile article on a topic where they are truly an expert can hope that other internet users dealing with the same topic will place a link to this article on their pages—whether it is about "The most beautiful decorating ideas for the living room," "Beekeeping for beginners," or "How to survive an all-inclusive vacation on Gran Canaria."

Other factors include meaningful keywords that capture the essence of each page: Someone looking for information on how to produce linden blossom honey with their own beehive will enter general search terms like "bees," "honey," and "beekeeping," but also specific terms like "linden blossom honey." A good website uses all search terms as keywords to ensure that the page appears in Google's search results.

How do I improve positioning in search results?

If your own website only appears on the third page of Google search results, it's time to take action. For commercial sites that are intended to earn real money, it is usually worthwhile to hire an SEO expert to analyze the existing pages and possibly thoroughly revise everything. However, every user can also contribute to improving search engine positioning by, for example, carefully selecting keywords, providing detailed good texts, and updating their own website more frequently.
