Entity SEO

Entity SEO aligns search engine optimization with entities – clearly identifiable things such as brands, people, products or places – instead of individual keywords. This way, Google and AI systems understand who you are and what you stand for.
Entity SEO

Entity SEO refers to aligning search engine optimization with entities instead of individual search terms. In Google’s understanding, an entity is a clearly identifiable thing or concept: a company, a person, a product, a brand, a place, an event or an abstract term. What matters is that an entity exists independently of its designation – "Apple" can mean the company or the fruit, and Google does not distinguish between the two based on the word itself, but on the context and known properties. Search engines and AI systems today work with such entities and their relationships to each other. Entity SEO ensures that your own brand, your products and people are recognized as clearly defined entities, correctly assigned and linked to the right topics.

From keyword to entity

Until around 2012, Google largely evaluated pages based on words: which terms appear, how often, in what position? With the Knowledge Graph, Google began to understand things instead of strings. The Hummingbird update in 2013, followed by RankBrain, BERT and MUM, deepened this development. Today, Google recognizes which entities are meant in a search query, what relationship exists between them and what intent lies behind it. A search for "running shoes for overpronation" is not processed as a sequence of words, but as a connection between the entity running shoe with the concept of overpronation and the purchase intent.

For search engine optimization, this means: a keyword is now only one of many possible labels for an entity. Those who only optimize for the keyword cover only a small section. Those who map the entity with all associated properties, synonyms and relationships become relevant for the entire topic area.

The Knowledge Graph

The Google Knowledge Graph is a database of entities and their relationships. It powers the knowledge panels on the right-hand side of the search results, the answer boxes and a significant part of the AI answers in AI Overviews. An entity that is stored in the Knowledge Graph can be clearly assigned by Google: it knows its name, its alternative designations, its type, its connections to other entities and its sources. For companies, an entry in the Knowledge Graph is therefore an important goal of Entity SEO – it is proof that Google has understood the brand as an independent entity.

Optimizing SEO entities: the measures

Define your own entities

First, determine which entities are central for the company – the brand itself, product lines, founders or subject-matter authors, locations, and, if applicable, proprietary technologies or processes. There should be a page for each entity that describes it completely.

Create consistency

Name, spelling, description, address and contact details must be identical on your own website, in company profiles, business directories, social networks and in Google Business Profile. Contradictory information makes assignment more difficult.

Use structured data

With Schema.org markup such as Organization, Person, Product or LocalBusiness, entities are described in a machine-readable way. The sameAs property links your own entity to external references such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, LinkedIn or industry directories and helps Google with unambiguous identification.

Build external grounding

Google confirms entities via independent sources. Entries in Wikidata, mentions in trade media, press coverage, directories and review platforms provide this confirmation. The more frequently an entity appears online in a consistent context, the more stable its assignment becomes.

Cover topics completely

Content should not only address the main keyword, but also the associated entities: related terms, properties, typical questions, comparison objects. Google evaluates whether a page comprehensively represents the topic area of an entity.

Internal linking based on entities

Pages that deal with the same entity are linked to each other, using anchor texts that name the entity. This creates a clear thematic structure within the website.

Entity SEO in e-commerce

For online shops, brands, products and product categories are the most important entities. Google must understand that a shop carries certain brands, which products belong to which category and what properties they have. Complete product data with GTIN, brand and attributes, clean category structures, brand pages with independent content and Product schema on every product page form the basis for this. A well-maintained Merchant Center feed complements these signals, because Google directly matches the product entities there with the Shopping Graph.

Importance for AI search

Language models think in entities and relationships. Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Mode recommend a brand depends on how clearly this brand is anchored as an entity on the web – with a clear description, consistent details and links to the relevant topics. Entity SEO is therefore a foundation of Generative Engine Optimization and is closely linked to the trust signals that Google summarizes under E-E-A-T.
